i've eaten too much

so, remember how i said i love to eat?
i take it back.

i ate too much.
i am so full.

after our Christmas dinner with the immediate family (rouladen, dumplings, rotkohl!), we went to my aunt and uncle's house for the extended family Christmas dinner.  we had turkey and cranberry sauce and stuffing and fancy cheeses and baking and blue cheese stuffed olives and potatoes and vegetables and trifle and chocolate and apple fig bread and pesto bruschetta (to name some).  Obviously, i can't say no to any of that, so I am having trouble moving today...

^^this is Gordon.  he wasn't cooperating for pictures...and he's about 900 pounds, so it's kind of hard to hold him in one place...

new stores make me happy

do you not just want to set up camp somewhere in a corner of this store and live there forever?  me too.  Unfortunately this store, Meadow Gifts + Apparel, is on the other side of the country, so I can't quite do that.  The next best thing has happened though; my cards get to live there!  Remember this post, way back when?  I was madly preparing cards to go to Meadow, but I couldn't tell you that yet, because they weren't open.  Now they are and I couldn't be more excited to have some cards with them over in Vancouver. :)

and then i woke up peacefully

so I have found my new wake up song

 thanks to regina.

this is a sad song about a friend of regina's who has passed away

but it is a beautiful song, too

and it reminds you to wake up and live your life while you are
alive and healthy

sometimes i need to hear that

and what better time than the very first thing in the morning
(and in song)?

into nature we went

On Friday, Pallavi and I decided that we both needed to escape our busy lives for a few hours and 'get into nature'.  She left the mountain of reading and assignments ahead of her, and I left the many, many things on my to do list that were just not getting crossed off (how does that keep happening?!).  We met at a parking lot in the middle of the city and then I drove us out to a conservation area on the outskirts of town.  We didn't come across a soul until the very end of our hike.  It was wonderfully quiet.  We bought a small bag of sunflower seeds at the beginning and fed the chickadees along the trail.  Let me tell you, it is a terrifying experience.  You'd think a person who loves hiking and camping would love feeding birds too, but that is not the case for me.  not at all.  It wasn't exactly a relaxing afternoon, to say the least...it was more thrilling, like a two hour roller coaster ride.  You see, these were very bold chickadees who expected to be fed by people every few seconds, but my gosh, I was not prepared for that.  They dive bombed our hands and tried to peck at my iphone, when all i wanted to do was catch a picture of Pallavi with a bird on her head.

So, bird feeding is maybe the most terrorizing nature related experience I've had, and I doubt I'll ever be able to not scream and cover my eyes when they land on me, but all in all, we had a great time enjoying the outdoors and taking a break from what we had to do.  All of our work was still waiting for us when we got back, but suddenly it didn't seem quite as intimidating as that moment when you notice thirty chickadees eying you from the pine bows above your head.

dear martha

Dear Martha Stewart;

Thank you for your 'creepcake' recipe.

Really, they were delicious.

But come on.
We don't know how you do it.

If we weren't flinging buttercream icing all over the place

we were cursing the batter

or googling 'should buttermilk look like this?!'

oh and also, it should not take two people to ice a cupcake

anyways,
we're very proud of our creepcakes
even though they don't look related to yours at all.

sincerely,

Jess and Maryanne

(Martha's...but you probably guessed that)

are you ready for it?

Ours:

Last weekend, this was a very welcomed break from the hectivity (is that a word?) of eight orders and a new job, too!

Now I must go get ready for the rehearsal dinner of a very special event (hint and hint)

:)

what do you do with a leftover turkey carcass?

why you make turkey soup, of course!

Back at Thanksgiving,
(where did last week go?!)

Sarah and I spent an entire day making turkey soup from scratch.

We let the carcass simmer for a few hours...

while we chopped five million vegetables
picked basil
minced garlic
and experimented with spices

Then we spent a good portion of our lives separating the rest of the meat from the bone,
before we assembled it all and let it simmer some more.

At the end of the day, it was well worth it.

It was the perfect thing to warm us up
and now we can say that we are successful soup chefs, too.

and I also learned what leeks are.
(I was picturing leeches....which I would not want to discover in my soup)

I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving,
or will have one in a few weeks!

print, cut, fold, package, sleep, repeat.

It's printing day!
Well, Friday was printing day.

Today was pick-up-because-the-printer-broke-on-Friday-day.

I have a very exciting new store to share in a little while,
but for now, I have a very busy week of cutting, folding, packaging and shipping to said store (and a few orders to fill and a custom mobile meeting, too!)

I ordered 1800 wholesale envelopes.
and they arrived today.
and I almost cried when the man told me what I had to pay in taxes and duty.
I may have whimpered slightly.

They turned out to be not so much wholesale afterall.  Oh well, I am still saving a bit and feel like I have enough envelopes for the rest of my life.  Maybe.

Although it will be a super hectic week
It's a good kind of hectic.
and I can see the light (shining on a giant Thanksgiving turkey and fun weekend catching up with family) at the end of the tunnel.

Death of a Salesman

Soulpepper shows are my new favourite thing. (after food)

Over the weekend, my mom and aunt and I went to see Sarah's final show for this season at Soulpepper, Death of a Salesman.

and it was oh so good.
This might have been my favourite.

I was halfway to whistling with my fingers, but I was sick and would have coughed up a lung.  And the man in front of me was already hair challenged - he didn't need a lung in it, too.

Now for some more pleasant mental images:

We ate a lot (is that better?)
and went to an antique market
and met friends (Emily!) for dinner
and watched 'How to Make It in America' with our caramel popcorn

and then we ran and ran to get to the train station on time. (as usual)

I want to go back already!

a skype date with my sister

I finally got on the Skype bandwagon!

Sarah says to me: "Let's have a Skype date.  I'll call you in the late morning - around 3:30, k?"

So, yesterday in the late, late "morning", Sarah and I had tea together

...and one of us had chocolate

but it was not me.
(I knew I put off getting Skype for a reason.
you can't share food?!)

We talked about good shows to watch ('Girls' on HBO. go watch.) and had a show & tell of our new clothes.

So, other than the huge food sharing failure brought to my attention

I think I like Skype.
I guess it can stay.

mobiles

and people wonder why I crack my knuckles all the time?
I practically have carpal tunnel.

These are some mobiles-to-be ('Jungle Elephants' & 'Dogs at Play') that I've been working on for Go Green Baby.
Natalie suggested that I come up with a design that we could sell for a bit less than the usual $150.
So...
these mobiles will have one stick, three ornaments, two animals, one sided.

got that? :)

a picnic at the beach!

and by beach, I mean park.
there was water
and seagulls
but there was also slippery seaweed

and no sand.

On the long weekend, Maryanne had the great idea of packing a picnic lunch and spending the afternoon by the water.
We drove and drove to get there
(ie. we took a wrong turn somewhere and found ourselves at a fruit stand in a strip mall parking lot before we realized we'd gone too far!)

We ate our lunch on the grass by the water, then explored the old house on the property

we also put the swings to good use

and climbed some trees
...until I noticed the two huge spider-like bugs above my head and almost cried/fell out of the tree.

Spiders do that to me.
How original.
(these really were huge though. I think even a man might cry)

All in all, it was a lovely day with the best company and a Martha Stewart Halloween magazine to drool over.  As we flipped through the pages, we couldn't help but wonder, is Martha for real?

Clearly i need to work on my "spontaneous poses"
this is not ok.

new stores!

I have three new stores!

(this is exciting news when you only had six to begin with)

They are as follows:

&

The Amber Room is owned by the family of my good friend, Agnes.
I met Agnes on my year off after high school while she, my sister and I worked together.  We were fast friends thanks to our shared love of good food and musicals.  I seem to remember acting out greased lightning while eating pizza and brownies.  Did we do that?  It's a blur of chocolate and cheese and John Travolta.....but I think we did.  Obviously, we're going to be friends forever, after that.

a very special wedding invitation!

the reveal!

This is the wedding invitation that I did for Maryanne & Scott's wedding in October.

They wanted something fall themed, nature inspired and whimsical.

The tree is based on my favourite tree near where I live (an old hickory tree).

I loved doing this.  It was definitely one of my favourite things to work on. :)

Are we in Canada?

Yesterday I came across two things that, separately, are nothing too remarkable, but together, it's a whole different story.

First,
I stepped on the word destiny carved into a sidewalk
(cool, i know)

Then,
I happened upon a billionaire fashion designer's 165ft 10 million dollar Italian yacht
(but that's totally normal around here...right? no.)

Anyway, it's pretty obvious that the universe is trying to tell me something.

It may as well just come right out and say

you're going to be a billionaire.

(i'd better go fold some more cards...)

My friend Emily and I talked to one of the 13 crew members on board the yacht, who asked us "Are we in Canada?" :)

P.S.  how many wrong ways are there to spell yacht?  I mean really.  Thank you university degree.

soulpepper!

It happened again,
a very Soulpeppery adventure

and I was maybe even more excited than last time

because this time

I also got to see my relatives
and my sweet and funny cousin
who says
"Oh God bless your soul!"
when you sneeze.

I love going to Soulpepper and seeing Sarah in her shows (The Crucible and The Royal Comedians, in case you're curious!).
I give her standing ovations and clap like it's my job, but I am still too shy to whistle with my fingers - a skill I taught myself especially for occasions such as these.  I need to overcome this shyness and not care about spitting on the fancy woman or the critic or the actor sitting beside me.  next time I will.

My cousin Kathleen and I both agree;
it's very strange to see Sarah on stage in front of hundreds of people,
but we love it (as evident from our many excited pictures before the show).

While in Toronto, I also had the chance to drop off more cards - and save on shipping!

Here are a few pictures from the weekend...
we are looking at absolutely nothing.  but we feel the need to "do" something in pictures...so we are looking at an imaginary bird (in three slightly different places, apparently).  what an awkward family...
the portrait Sarah drew of me (mentioned in this post).
i am impressed :)
